In the mountainous regions of southwest China, one can still hear the echoes of a 3,000 year old music tradition traveling across vast grasslands and circulating in the market squares. Aside from singing, mouth harp music is the most widespread and commonly found musical form in the world. While almost every cultural group practices some type of mouth harp performance, the Nuosu Yi in southwest China are special in that they are able to use the instrument as a form of communication. The Nuosu Yi mouth harp exemplifies an extraordinary musical phenomenon in which tones and rhythmic patterns of the instrument emulate the inflections and cadences of human speech. When playing the mouth harp, the Nuosu Yi are able to express internal feelings and emotions, engage in courtship affairs, mimic the melodies of folk songs, and depict actual or fictitious past events as a form of storytelling. Allegedly, the symbolic meanings expressed through mouth harp performance are mutually intelligible amongst Nuosu Yi practit
ioners of various regions. Yet to what extent does the mouth harp actually instill a sense of ethnic identity and unity amongst diverse Yi groups? For the Nuosu Yi, the importance of the mouth harp is in its vital role for maintaining Yi identity and values in the face of drastic cultural changes. At the same time, many people fear that the mouth harp culture may be at the verge of extinction. We hope this documentary series will not only act as an advocate for the instrument's musical and cultural preservation, but more importantly for its continuity as a human phenomenon. We invite you to join us on this journey of exploration, as we travel across diverse landscapes to find the remaining Yi mouth harp experts; this journey of discovery, as we encounter mouth harp practitioners of all ages in unexpected areas; and this journey of wonder, as we unlock the ancient wisdom and secrets of Yi mouth harp legends, construction, and playing techniques.
